Is lemon good for your voice? ( Or is it? )

The competition between singers is massive, every serious singer has its own preferred foods which help their voice in order to get an edge over the competition. Generally speaking, most singers do use honey, lemon and even different kinds of teas to improve and maintain their voice. However relying on just one of these magical foods which help your voice could be a bad idea, in the long run, you should always mix it up from time to time.

Yes, lemon is good for your voice as it hydrates you, contains a lot of Vitamin C, keeps away infections, protects against anemia and inflammation.

If you want your voice to sound better then my personal recommendation is to use throat pastilles which are specially designed for singers and performers, these will help you clear and soothe your voice Click here to check it out on Amazon.com

The problem is that if you have Vitamin C deficiency and you start eating lemons you will see amazing results within a couple of days to your voice. Do note that you can overdo it by eating lemons all day long, at which point your body will have an excess of Vitamin C and your body will simply eliminate it. You need to have a balanced diet to get the health and voice benefits of lemons, my recommendation is to also incorporate ginger in your diet, for more information check out my recent article Is ginger good for the voice.

Oftentimes the biggest mistake of beginner singers when it comes to nutrition is that they do add some healthy foods into their diet, but their diet as a whole is not giving them an edge and it is actually hindering their progress. There is a big misconception between eating lemons or eating products that contain lemons like lemon sodas, the truth is that most of these drinks and foods contain either some synthetic form of lemons just for the taste or that they do not contain nearly enough lemons. If you are interested in what kinds of foods you should incorporate in your diet as a singer, check out my recent article Foods to improve singing voice.

It hydrates you

Lemons contain a lot of water which will keep you hydrated a lot longer than by simply drinking water. The body absorbs water fairly quickly, but as a singer, this isn’t always your main goal as you might be singing for several minutes without a break. Once ingested your body will need to start the process of digesting the actual lemon and only after it has digested the lemon it can access the water contained inside of it.

I have seen a lot of people eating either dehydrated lemons or pre-packaged dehydrated lemons, my recommendation is to avoid these at all costs. Dehydrated foods actually use need a lot of water to be digested, and you can get actually dehydrated if you consume them. On the other hand, prepackaged dehydrated lemons will probably contain a lot of preservatives which is also not beneficial to your health and body.

Contains a lot of Vitamin C

Vitamins are essential for not only your health as a person but for the numerous day to day functions of your body. Having a Vitamin C deficiency will lead to other health complications down the line. As a singer, it is vital that you have a healthy diet which does contain all the vitamins and minerals that your body needs. Believe it or not, singing can be quite exhausting for your body if you do not eat healthily then your body will take a longer time to recover which will hinder your progress as a singer.

Keeps away infections

One of the biggest problems for singers is throat infections, which believe it or not are way too common for singers. Beginner singers tend to force their throat and vocal cords way too much as they think that this is how they improve. However, if you repeatedly force your throat and vocal cords, don’t have a healthy diet and enough sleep you will eventually get a throat infection. Although throat infections are fairly easy to treat, the problem is that an infection it could strike at any time.

Going to an audition as a singer with a throat infection isn’t ideal, and you might have to skip the audition just because you dint add lemon to your diet. Lemons have antimicrobial properties, which means that it will help you fight off a throat infection before it actually starts impacting the quality of your voice. Do not underestimate how powerful against infections can something simple as a lemon can be.

If you go to any pharmacy and take a look at the cold and flu medicine you will notice that most of them do contain Vitamin C and lemon. Although if you want to improve the quality of your voice you should eat lemons and not other supplements which may or may not contain lemons.

Protects against anemia

Anemia is a condition where the human body has not enough iron in it, to put it simply it is an iron deficiency. Although you might ask yourself what has an iron deficiency to do with singing or the quality of your voice? Actually any deficiency can make serious health complications, as a singer, your primary goal is to get better at singing but you ill not be able if your body is in a constant struggle because it either doesn’t get the necessary minerals and vitamins or because it is fighting an already existing health condition.

Lemons are not known for their high iron content, because they do have some iron in them but nearly not enough for your daily recommended dose. What lemon actually does it that it will help your body absorb a lot more iron than it normally does. Lemons contain a lot of Vitamin C and citric acid, which both aid your body into absorbing iron from other sources like fish and chicken meat.

Protects against inflammation

Lemons do have anti-inflammatory properties, inflammation of the throat is fairly common for beginner singers but it is not limited to them. When flue season comes a simple cold or flu could inflame your throat to a point where it will affect your voice. Lemon has been used for centuries as an anti-inflammatory agent thought the world, and it is used even today in our modern medicine. My recommendation is if you start noticing that your throat hurts than go and eat a lemon to fight off the potential infection or inflammation.

In conclusion

Lemon is extremely good for your voice, no matter if you are a singer or not. To get most of the potential benefits for your voice with lemons you will have to add lemons to your diet and consume it on a daily basis. Make a habit of consuming lemons each morning, simply squeeze half of the lemon into warm water and drink it while the water is still warm. You will not only have a better voice by consuming lemons but you will also protect your throat and vocal cords against potential infections and inflammations.
